Kimball was born on September 9, 1907 in Saginaw (Mich.). He graduated from Saginaw High School and studied architecture at the University of Michigan, earning a B.S. degree in Architecture (1929). After an additional year of graduate studies, he worked briefly for an architectural firm in Saginaw before beginning his own practice in the same city.
